Under African Skies allows Simon to address critics from the era who insisted he was wrong to work on Graceland in South Africa during the United Nations’ cultural boycott of the country — a key strategy in the fight against apartheid.

The 10-day shoot in South Africa reunites former Graceland collaborators such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo for an anniversary concert.

It’s finals week, and you’re probably looking for a nice excuse to stop studying for bit — well, look no more! Fresh off the presses is this Writers Talk video with fellow MEISA member — Lisa Heineman — interviewing Adam Lazzara, John Nolan, and Shaun Cooper of Taking Back Sunday.

Also, best wishes for a speedy recovery to Adam Lazzara as a tree fell on him last week and shattered his leg! And wouldn’t you know it, this happened in Michigan.

We came, we saw, we STOMPED.

So this month started off with a bang, or should I say, a STOMP — as we had a social event where we watched, listened, and laughed at people making music with things. Just so you know, it was better than we were expecting — totally worth the $0 we paid, but we definitely would have shelled out some clams to see it again. Just a quick thought — but there should be a dubstep version of STOMP called dubSTOMP.

Erik Kang – Margot and the Nuclear So & So’s

None of them are actually Margot.

To keep the ball rolling, this Tuesday (February 7th – 7:30pm), we’re going to have the pleasure of Erik Kang, the guitarist of Margot and the Nuclear So & So’s join us for a magical evening – so don’t hold back on that cologne and perfume, this guy deserves all the scents we have. That was a pun. Anyway, we’re super stoked to have him share some insights on the music scene, from both sides of the curtain.

Demetri Martin – The Man With Funny Thoughts

He produces LULZ.

And then some guy named Demetri Martin is going to show up here at the Ohio Union this Wednesday (February 8th) and try to make us laugh. We’re hard to impress, but we’ll give him a shot. The doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm – a ticket is needed to get in, so just head to the front desk of the Union, show them your Buck ID, and the jump for joy as you have just been given the key to happiness. It’s not sold out as this is being written, but I’m sure that it will be!

Gooeyz & The Grammys – A Beautiful Combination

We’re not done yet! This upcoming Sunday (February 12th – 7:30pm), we will head to Gooeyz for a Grammy watching party sponsored by Sony Music Entertainment. It’ll be an evening filled with prizes, Sony demos, giveaways, and (of course) delicious food! For those of age, there is also a fine selection of adult beverages to kick off a new week.

So that’s about it for February (for now), and we already have a couple of other exciting events cooking in the back room of the MEISA Headquarters – so be on the look out for when we announce anything else! So you’ve wanted to get into the music business? Getting some work experience isn’t a must, but it’s extremely recommended so you can put it on your résumé, network like a boss, and also just to see if it’s what you’d want to do for a career. This week we’re going to have a couple of our members share their internship experiences.

This Wednesday: Awesome (And Free) OSU Event

Also, there happens to be an awesome event being held at the Ohio Union: OUAB & OSU Hillel Present Funny Men: An Inside Look into What Makes America Laugh this Wednesday. The doors open at 6pm, and the show starts at 7pm — and it features Doug Ellin – the head writer of Entourage, Kenny Schwartz – executive producer and writer for American Dad!, & David Javerbaum – the former head writer and executive producer of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

So, see you guys Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and let’s try to be awesome. Hell yeah.

Every now and again we decide to gather around and hand out our musical nuggets of gold to others, while also accepting some in return. We expand our horizons, we talk to new people, and we find out who actually likes Justin Bieber. Some come by tonight and get your music swap on!

It’s the last winter quarter here at The Ohio State University before semesters kick in, and we better make it one to remember. Our first meeting of the quarter is happening tomorrow (Tuesday, January 10th), and we’ve been shifted to Lazenby Hall 034. Welcome back from break, and we all hope you got to relax – seeing it was the last new years we’ll have since the world is going to end in 2012. We’re looking to hear about all your goings on at Tuesday’s meeting, both music related and not.

Also, the Winter Involvement Fair is happening this Thursday (January 12th) at the Ohio Union from 6-9pm. Why so late? No idea. But we’ll be there.

• Meet Fellow Buckeyes: Ohio State is pretty huge (56,867 students and counting), and we’re here to help. Joining a student organization that deals with stuff you’re interested in is a great way to make this campus feel smaller. Also, we aren’t too shy about having fun – so social gatherings, parties, concerts, and the like are always in store.

• Opportunities Abound: Other than getting to know your classmates, entertainment industry professionals, and people in between – there are also a great deal of projects that we work on as a club. Sometimes it’s helping promote a show, other times it’s actually helping bands produce usable marketing material, and sometimes we just host events! You can always come up with idea, and we’ll try our best on helping make it a reality.

FACT: We don't lie

• Résumé Building Time: Yeah, it never hurts saying you’re a member of MEISA – especially if you want to get a career within the entertainment industry in some way, shape, or form. Also, we have elections every year, so you can find yourself in a leadership position if you’re up for it! But if not, just being an active member is always cool.

• VIP Status Member Cards: Who else here enjoys eating food, doesn’t like to cook, and doesn’t have that much money to spend? Well – we’ve got a fix for that. Once you become a member, you’ll then get your own MEISA member card that we will be able to use to get a discount in the South Campus Gateway. The discount is in the works, but it will be finalized pretty soon!

• Free T-Shirt: Just to show everyone else how amazing you are, we’ll be giving you an awesome T-Shirt once you’re a member. MEISA swag – on us.

• Posters, CDs, & Stickers – Oh My! Every week we have a nice rotation of goodies brought to you by Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group. Yeah, if you haven’t noticed we have tons of stuff we’re just itching to give away.

Calling all MEISA members, we’re having an end of quarter feast in the South Campus Gateway at Gooeyz tonight at 7:30 pm. If you haven’t been there, get ready to have the most delicious grilled cheese you’ve ever had in your life. Here’s some directions for those that aren’t familiar:

It’ll be a nice way to take a break from the finals that are looming over us, and also a delicious way to mingle. And for those of you that are 21+, there’s a nice selection of wine & spirits to knock back. See you guys and girls there!
